We joined a real Sicilian fish auction — and walked away with €70 of the freshest catch on the Mediterranean coast. Watch what happened next.
Every morning, just minutes from the ancient Greek ruins of Selinunte, the fishermen bring in their catch. But getting the best fish isn’t as simple as choosing what you like — you have to bid for it. When we first started coming to this market it took a while to understand the high speed patter of Giovanni, the auctioneer, But now we are regular attendees we have been accepted by the community as locals and not tourists.
Rina spotted the Pesce Porcu — the prized Hogfish of the Sicilian coast — which we have never seen before, and directed me to bid on it — €37 later and we have great deal for fish weighing 1.5 kilos (over 3 pounds)!
Three more bids and we’re heading home with a haul that would make any Sicilian fisherman proud. A total of 4 kilos (almost 9 pounds) for €70.
Living as expats in Sicily, five minutes from the Mediterranean and the historic site of Selinunte, moments like this remind us why we made the move from Piedmont. The Sicilian way of life is something you have to experience to believe.
