Scripps News has learned that the New Mexico Department of Justice has filed a 40-page lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, accusing the agency of refusing to turn over records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The lawsuit seeks documents tied to investigations into Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s Zorro Ranch in New Mexico and any alleged co-conspirators. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez argues the DOJ has repeatedly failed to comply with records requests, while the federal government cites privacy concerns and claims the requests are overly broad.
The filing also revives questions surrounding a state investigation launched in 2019 and whether federal authorities ever fulfilled a promise to provide records to New Mexico.
