A federal judge on Tuesday declined a petition from Ghislaine Maxwell to challenge her sex trafficking conviction.
Maxwell represented herself in the habeas petition challenging her detention that she filed last December, which sought to set aside her conviction and allow for a new trial, The Hill reported. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence after she was convicted of conspiring with and aiding Jeffrey Epstein in his sexual abuse of underage girls.
U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York, an Obama appointee, noted Maxwell had previously been “represented by able counsel” but did not use her lawyer to file what he described as “a lengthy and rambling petition” that failed to open new avenues for her defense.
